The Marquesas Islands: Volcanic Cathedrals at the Edge of the World

After twenty-two days with nothing on the horizon but the uninterrupted curve of the Pacific, Louie finally called the two words we had been waiting to hear: “Land ho!” It was still dark when his voice carried below deck. Roughly 870 miles northeast of Tahiti and thousands of miles from the nearest continental shore, The Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia are among the most remote inhabited islands on Earth, and their isolation has shaped nearly everything about them: their plants, their fish, their birds, their languages, and the communities that developed within their steep and often inaccessible valleys.

Crossing the Pacific Ocean: 21 Days at Sea from Mexico to the Marquesas

There is a peculiar point in preparing to cross an ocean when something that has existed for months as an idea suddenly becomes very, very real. For us, the Pacific had lingered on the horizon throughout our voyage south from Alaska in fall and winter of 2024/25: first as a line on a chart, then as a distant milestone, then as the next chapter waiting beyond Mexico. By the time we reached Baja California Sur, the Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia sat nearly 3,000 nautical miles across an enormous expanse of open water.

The Inland Ocean: Wandering Loreto and the Islands Beyond

The Sea of Cortez was uncharted water for both of us, a new chapter in a journey already unfolding like a weathered map. Day by day, this coast drew us deeper into its spell. The rhythm of the tides, the stillness of its sheltered bays, the desert mountains standing watch above the sea like ancient sentinels; everything felt both foreign and strangely familiar. Baja quickly became one of those places that settles beneath your skin. The farther north we traveled, the more we found ourselves captivated by the contrasts.

Falling in Love in Southeast Alaska: Where the Voyage Began

Southeast Alaska was not where I expected my life to change. The first time I went there to photograph an elopement, to witness glaciers, and to document a fleeting solstice. What I found instead was a place that rearranged me. The landscape moves slowly but decisively, glaciers carving valleys, tides reshaping shorelines, light stretching long into night. I came north for a single week and left with my course in life quietly altered.

At the Edge of Summer: Sailing South Through British Columbia

There is a particular tenderness to a southbound passage in late summer, when the first hints of autumn settle into the rainforests and the days begin to shorten around the edges. British Columbia became our threshold between worlds: the place where we left behind the familiar rhythm of Alaska and slipped into the unfolding unknown of our long sailing journey ahead. We were between seasons, between Alaska and the rest of the United States.

Alaska’s Emerald Isle: Circumnavigating Kodiak Island

There are places you arrive at expecting little, and they bloom into grandeur so sudden and staggering, you wonder how you ever doubted their majesty. Such was the case with Kodiak. There’s a moment when the sea hushes and the sky leans in, a stillness that settles over the Gulf of Alaska as you near the Kodiak Archipelago. During our fog-laden crossing, we sailed past the rocky Barren Islands between Homer and Kodiak.
